Wondering if you are deficient in any essential vitamins? This is what it looks like to have a Magnesium Deficiency!

Potassium gets the spotlight when starting a Ketogenic diet, but the second mineral that many of us are deficient in is Magnesium!

Magnesium is used in hundreds of processes in our body. Making proteins, energy, hair, skin, nails, and muscle to name a few. It also helps the heart rhythm, effects blood pressure (can lower high blood pressure), can help with muscle cramps, muscle tone, and it helps balance Calcium.

Too much calcium looks like arthritis and bone spurring (bony lumps that grow on bones). Magnesium can help bring this excess back down.

Magnesium is great for lowering stress, good for sleeping, and can be taken for constipation. 

Natural sources of Magnesium are leafy greens, other vegetables, eggs, nuts, and other foods. (Best to get it from leafy greens.)

Men need 400-420 mg of magnesium a day.

Women need 310-320 mg of magnesium a day.

Things that create a Magnesium deficiency are too much Calcium, alcohol, sugar, and low stomach acid. You need effective stomach acid to pull magnesium into the body. 

(Low stomach acid looks like gas, heart burn, indigestion, and acid reflux. To increase stomach acid take 1 Tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar and 1 half squeezed lemon in 12 oz of water. Do this with each meal)

Magnesium is also connected to insulin resistance. We recommend 7-10 cups of leafy veggies a day with intermittent fasting. The veggies give you the Potassium and Magnesium to help reduce insulin resistance. (Full plan for our Clean Keto Diet here)
