What Does a Heart of Palm Taste Like? (And Why I’m Obsessed)

If you’ve never tried hearts of palm before, let me put you on real quick—because these are my ride-or-die snack. I’m not talking fancy recipes or salad toppers. I’m talking straight from the jar, standing in the kitchen, barely making it to a plate.

They’re that good.
And I’m not the only one who thinks so—my 4-year-old is just as obsessed. We open a jar and it’s like a race to the finish. No crumbs, no leftovers, just empty glass and happy crunches.

So... What Does a Heart of Palm Taste Like?

Imagine:

  • A soft, tender crunch

  • The buttery vibe of an artichoke heart

  • A super mild, slightly tangy flavor (especially if pickled)

  • Clean, almost creamy texture—but never mushy

They’re salty, savory, and oddly addictive. Like pickles—but better.

Glass Jar vs. Can (This Matters)

Let’s talk quality. The ones in the glass jar? They’re elite.
Way smoother. Way fresher-tasting. None of that weird metallic aftertaste you sometimes get from the canned ones. Once you try them jarred, you won’t even glance at the canned aisle again.

But warning: they’re hard to find.
Like unicorn-level hard. If you ever see them in-store, just know I’m mentally high-fiving you as you toss five jars in your cart. #WorthIt

Here are a few stores I have found them in so far:
Costco, Sprouts, Walmart and Fred Meyer. But even then, locations vary! I went to a Costco in Oregon that didn't have them. If all else fails, you can get them on Amazon: Hearts of Palm on Amazon

Why I’m So Hooked

  • They’re clean and low-calorie

  • They check all my ingredient-snob boxes

  • I don’t have to prep, chop, or cook

  • My toddler eats them by the handful

  • I crave them more than chips. Yes, I said it.

Final Word

If you’ve never tried hearts of palm, now is the time —but make it the glass jar kind if you want the full magic.
Don’t overthink it. Just open the jar, grab a fork (or don’t), and snack away.
No side dish. No recipe. No regrets.
